Wedding O'Day

weddingblog.jpg

I cannot believe I haven't written a blog post since April 14th! Time has gone so quickly and so much has happened over the past three months... the biggest being that I am now Mrs. O'Day!! I married the love of my life July 7th in Scotland. Paul is from Scotland, and all of his family still lives there, so it was important for me for my friends and family to understand where he comes from and give them the chance to see the beautiful country I have fallen in love with. I have attended two Scottish weddings before and it's nothing like I've ever experienced! I loved the kilts, bagpipes, and hats... it is such a huge celebration! So when the time came to plan my own wedding, I knew I wanted it to be in Scotland.

Paul and I met at Lindenwood University in 2009. I received a scholarship through Miss Nebraska Teen USA and he came to the states on a golf scholarship. We met the very first week of school and became best friends right away. I was surprised to find out Lindenwood is a big international school and I became friends with people from all over the world! Because we were all far away from home, we created a bond unlike any other, and our wedding was a chance to see friends we haven't seen in a while! We had friends from twelve different countries come and celebrate with us! Excuse the pun, but it meant the World to us that they were all there!

My bridesmaids were friends that played an important role in each stage of my life. Given my target market has been predominately in the pageant industry, I wanted to highlight two of my bridesmaids. I met Hannah Billingsley (Miss Arkansas USA 2013) and Ellie Holtman (Miss Missouri USA 2013) when we were competing for Miss USA. We were all part of the Vanbros Organization and trained together the months leading up to the pageant. Ellie was my Miss USA roommate and I could not imagine my year without them! We have supported each other since day one and everyday after that. I love hearing stories of friendships formed through pageantry! It's true when they say, "girls compete with each other, women empower one another!"

A lot of people thought I would design my dress. A part of me wanted to, but I thought it would be too stressful and expensive. After working in the bridal industry briefly, I learned that wedding dresses and bridesmaids dress are so overpriced! I wanted something simple and elegant! My dress was from Sherri Hill's Spring 2016 prom collection and my bridesmaid dresses were from Lily's Boutique online. I didn't have to leave the couch or break the bank for any of my wedding wardrobe!

I wish I could describe the day eloquently with words to capture every detail, but I can't. I wish I could bottle the feeling of the wedding day and keep it forever. For my own sake, I will try to write down the details to go back in year's time to remember the day so if you want to tune out for this part go right ahead, it might sound like a diary entry...

July 7th, 2016: My family and I were staying in what they call the Boat House right on the water front by the venue. We woke up to the most beautiful day! Given that the wedding was in Scotland, the chance of it being rainy and cold was very very likely! We could not have asked for a more perfect day. My bridesmaids arrived to get ready, but the house was so big that it almost felt like it was empty even with everyone there. The only moment of stress I felt was when everyone else was starting to get ready and I hadn't started yet, but I had my dream team of my cousin Katy (who did my hair with a separated shoulder! What a trooper) and Sophie Compton (Scotland's greatest makeup artist) to get me ready. I hate being late so I was anxious when the car to pick up the bridesmaids was running late. At that point I just wanted to get the show on the road and see Paul!

The ceremony itself felt like it took 15 min! There were a few hiccups that I have to laugh about now, the first being my veil kept snagging on the cobblestones outside of the church and would yank my hair back. Since all my bridesmaid were already at the alter, there was no one there to fix it. I have short hair so I had a hair piece in to help fill out my updo, I was so scared the veil was going to pull it out and my hair would be lying in a clump in the middle of the aisle! Fed up, I ripped it out of my head just as I was starting to walk down the aisle and threw it at someone, I don't know who it was but it some how managed to find it's way back to me in time for the pictures.

One thing I love about Scotland is all of the castles! So of course we had to take photos in a castle! We went to Dirleton Castle which was right next to the reception venue. I am so excited to get back all of the photos. Luckily our amazing photographer, Derek Christie, posted some previews of the day for me to share!

After photos at Dirleton we joined everyone else at Archerfield Golf Club for the reception. The venue was on the coast of the North Sea looking out on a gorgeous island with a light house where they say Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired to write Treasure Island.  It was great to finally see and talk to our guests before we sat down for an amazing meal. One of my favorite parts of the day was sitting at the head table being able to look out at all of our friends and family, but it was also the first time Paul and I were able to just be ourselves and relax. It was so gorgeous outside, that between courses our guest would get up and wander down to the beach. After tear jerking speeches and a few more photos, we cut the cake and had our first dance. Paul and I love Jersey Boys and Frankie Valli! We have seen it three times in three different cities, own the movie, and listen to the album all the time, so of course our first song was "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." In Scotland it's not normal to have a father daughter dance so that was a tradition we added. Growing up, my dad and I would swing dance so we were very excited, but our moment was short lived when our flower girl and page boy stole the show. There was no way we could compete with that cuteness!!!

Our niece and nephew stole the show with their dancing and kissing on the dance floor!

The highlight of the night was when the band took a break and we had an American BBQ, just when guests were finishing their hamburgers and hotdogs, Saltire Beat, a Bagpipe band, came out and played. Everyone was on their feet dancing! By the end of the night I was exhausted!

The whole week leading up to the day was eventful. My mom, Paul and I arrived at Paul's house on Thursday before the wedding. We spent Thursday and Friday running errands and getting everything organized for the chaos that would soon come. Saturday Paul had a Stag Do (Bachelor Party) and went golfing and out for dinner with the guys while I had a Hen Do (Bachelorette Party) with the girls! We went to a lovely restaurant in Glasgow where my sister in laws planned little activities that made the night extra special. It was very low key compared to what I am sure most Hen Parties are like, but it was just what I wanted and absolutely perfect!

Sunday, my dad and friends Hannah (bridesmaid) and Shay arrived. Poor Hannah and Shay had a nightmare of a time trying to get to Scotland and was supposed to be there on Saturday. We spent the morning going to Mill Farm and at night my Aunt and Uncle from Montana arrived. We all had dinner with Paul's family and friends and then Hannah, Shay, Paul and I went to the local pub.

Monday, the next group of visitors arrived. My mom's friends, Deb and Julie (who I call my aunts) and Julie's daughter Holly arrived, along with my other bridesmaid, Sara. Again we spent the morning walking to Mill Farm. In the afternoon Hannah, Shay, Sara, Holly, Paul and I went into Edinburgh (my favorite city). We met up with another bridesmaid, Kate and her mom Lindy. After getting caught in the rain we decided to head back to Paul's for the 4th of July party at his parents!

Tuesday was another big day of arrivals! My brother, his fiance Allison (also a bridesmaid), and my sister (Maid of Honor) all arrived after spending time in Portugal first.  Everyone that was visiting went into Edinburgh for the day. While some people went off to explore the city, Paul and I went to a pub in the Grassmarket to wait for our friends from school to arrive. It was so much fun seeing familiar faces walk up the street! It was a chore to get Paul and Shay to finally leave the pub, but we had to go home to get ready to leave for Archerfield.

Wednesday we packed up the cars and headed to Haddington to the church for rehearsal. After a brief rehearsal we went to the venue where the boys headed off to golf and the girls went to lunch and enjoyed a day at the spa! We had dinner and a quiet night at the boat house with just mine and Paul's immediate family. Thursday was the big day and I needed my beauty rest.

Thursday was the best day of my life!

Friday everyone who was staying at Archerfield went to the club house for brunch. The highlight was the snaps I was getting from my bridesmaid table of my poor sister who had a little too much fun. Sorry Maddie, but these are just too funny not to remember! I love you! We were all exhausted. When we went back to Paul's house, I had to take a nap because another party was about to begin! We had another gorgeous day which was perfect for the bbq Paul's parents planned for friends and family. After opening gifts and packing for our honeymoon in Switzerland, we headed to Edinburgh. We met up with our friends again at a bar close to the hotel and spent the night saying our goodbyes.

The next day we had lunch with our moms and they took us to the airport. They ever so sneakily covered us in confetti as we left to spend four days in Lake Lugano and Lake Como. Our honeymoon was very relaxed. We took in the beautiful sights, spent two days lounging by the pool and going to the spa, and just reminisced on the wonderful two weeks we had. It was very hard to come back to reality, but we have very exciting things in the works and so much to look forward to as Mr. and Mrs. O'Day!

Dana Michelle Calligraphy

I am excited to announce a collaboration with Dana Michelle Calligraphy! Dana and I met freshman year at Lindenwood University. Little did we know years later we would both be embarking on our own businesses! We are proof that doodling in class can be beneficial.

Many of my customers have asked me to write on their illustrations. I used to in the past, but it was so stressful and I hate my handwriting! That is why I am bringing in a professional! Dana Michelle Calligraphy will give you the option to have a name and title written BEAUTIFULLY on a custom illustration. Now when you order, you will find a drop down option to add Dana Michelle Calligraphy!

Be sure to check out Dana's amazing work on her Facebook and Instagram page! She creates amazing keepsakes and gifts as well as gorgeously addressing wedding invites!

One thing I love about winter is curling up in a blanket with a sketch book and full stomach. I love warming, comfort foods and there are three recipes that are always my go to meal! I like to try new recipes, but I always find myself returning to my favorites! If you're like me and plan on spending your weekend cozied up by the fire, try these super easy comfort foods for dinner!

Creamy Tomato Tortellini Soup

Ingredients

  • 2 whole large Cloves Garlic
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1/4 cup Sun dried tomatoes
  • 2 cups Chicken stock
  • 2 10 3/4 oz Cans Tomato soup, Condensed
  • 1 whole 9 Oz Package Cheese filled tortellini
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 cups Half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. In a large pot saute garlic with the olive oil.
  2. When the garlic is done, add tomato soup, tomatoes (I like mine without sun dried tomatoes) half and half, chicken stock and spices.
  3. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Once simmering, drop tortellini into the soup. Cook according to the package directions.
  5. After tortellini are cooked, ladle soup into bowls and top with parmesan cheese. I usually cut this recipe in half.
Bacon Chicken Ranch Pasta

Ingredients

  • 1 pound mostaccioli or other short pasta (I like rotini)
  • 6 strips of bacon, diced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breast halves, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet ranch dressing mix (I would recommend Hidden Valley)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions in boiling salted water; drain, return to pot, and keep warm.
  2. Meanwhile, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Drain all but one tablespoon of bacon drippings from the pan.
  3. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Add the butter to the reserved bacon drippings, then add the chicken to the same skillet. Cook until tender, no longer pink, and slightly browned.
  4. Sprinkle the flour and ranch dressing mix over the chicken, stirring to coat evenly. Stir in the milk, and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened and bubbly. Stir in the cheddar cheese and half of the reserved bacon; cook and stir until the cheese is melted. Taste for seasoning and adjust as needed.
  5. Add the cheese sauce to the reserved pasta and stir to combine. Serve each plate of pasta with more bacon sprinkled over the top.
Biscuit Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons butter
  • 2lbs chopped cooked chicken breasts or 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped pimiento or 1/2 cup sauteed red bell peppers or 1/2 cup jarred roasted red pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese
  • refrigerated biscuit

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Grease the bottom and sides of an 11x7 inch baking dish or 10 inch quiche dish.
  3. Chop the onion.
  4. Heat butter in a small nonstick skillet and saute until tender.
  5. Combine cooked onion, soup, chicken, milk, pimiento, and mayo in a bowl and then turn into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes and remove from oven.
  7. Sprinkle 1 cup of the cheese over the baked mixture.
  8. Arrange biscuits decoratively in a single layer and sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup cheese over them.
  9. Return casserole to oven and bake until biscuits are golden brown and sauce is bubbly, usually about 20 minutes longer.

The Golden Globes 2016

This past Sunday I took a break from my normal orders and decided to try live sketching during the Golden Globes.  Usually it takes me a while to do an illustration, so I really wanted to practice drawing quickly.  I loved the rush of trying to get it done in a certain time and it was nice not having to worry about every little detail since it wasn't for anyone but myself. I picked the five dresses that stood out to me and they are all quite different!

The first dress I drew was Gina Rodriquez from Jane the Virgin.  I love navy dresses! And this Zac Posen ball gown could not have been more perfect. Zac Posen is one of my favorite designers so I loved starting the night off with one of his amazing designs.  I also love Gina Rodriquez! If you haven't seen Jane the Virgin yet, I highly recommend it!! Season 1 is on Netflix.

The Next dress, and favorite of the night, was Zendaya in a stunning Marchasa maroon gown.  After I started, I panicked when I took a closer look at the fabric. It was a maroon gown, but it had a black lace/floral pattern. Since I was trying to do the sketch as quickly as possible, I stopped thinking about it and just let my hand take over. It was my favorite look and one of my favorite sketches I've ever done!

The next show stopping gown was Laverne Cox from Netflix's Orange is the New Black.  This Elizabeth Kennedy jersey gown was so classic and elegant. The draping on this gown looked unbelievable on her and she knew how to work it! I couldn't get into Orange is the New Black, but I adore Laverne Cox and I loved being able to draw her.

I was very excited for the next drawing, because I LOVE Giuliana Rancic! I had the opportunity to meet her while competing at Miss USA and she is so sweet. I could never picture myself wearing this Alex Perry, but I think it looked fabulous on Giuliana! I don't think I've ever drawn an orange gown before!

I was going to be done after Giuliana, but then I saw Lady Gaga in her Versace black velvet gown. It's crazy how she used to show up to award shows in bizarre costumes and now shows up looking so glamorous!  This gown was so perfect for her. It's a great combination of her new hollywood look and the unique haute couture she is known for.

I really surprised myself with this new challenge. I thought I would mess up and get frustrated, but I really enjoyed it and was able to draw and color all five illustrations in four hours! The highlight of the night however was finding out that Gina, Laverne, and Giuliana liked the illustrations! I about fell out of my chair when Paul nonchalantly said, "Giuliana just commented on your photo." Ahh!!!  One goal I set for myself this year is to have a celebrity repost one of my illustrations. So please send me some positive thoughts as I try to accomplish this personal goal. Until then I will just mentally high five myself to the thought that so many women I admire saw my illustration.

I am planning on live sketching again for other award shows this season, so stay tuned!

                                                     Lots of Love,

Can't Stop. Won't Stop: 2015

New Year's Eve is always an anxious day for me. What will the new year bring? How could it possibly be better than the last? This year was a year of travel! I never want to say no to a new adventure, even if it means I'm always on the go. It was fun to look back on all the adventures I had this year and share a little bit about each trip!

Chicago

Paul and I started off the year traveling to Chicago in January to visit his parents. Chicago is one of my favorite cities, but definitely not in January! We only got a few blocks before Paul's mom and I had to stop to buy leggings for under our clothes. Being from Nebraska I know cold, but there is nothing like Chicago cold!

Nebraska/Iowa

I headed up to the Nebraska cold in February for a very exciting day for our family! My oldest brother, Jordan, turned 30!!! For those of you who do not know Jordan, you are missing out. He is pretty amazing! He has shaped my life in so many ways and I am so lucky to have him as a brother.  We had a big party to celebrate him and our family was blown away when over 100 people came to celebrate with him! He has touched so many lives and it was so special to see how loved he truly is.

During the winter I also went to Iowa to celebrate some other special ladies. My sister had her 3rd successful Iowa Miss Amazing Pageant! It is always so much fun to see old friends and meet new ones.  Miss Amazing has such a special place in my family's heart.

The Carolinas

Luckily my other trips brought me to warmer weather! In the spring, Paul and I went to North Carolina with his Aunt and Uncle for some sun and golf! We spent a day exploring Charleston and then drove to Myrtle Beach where we were staying. I had fun practicing my golf game, but I was very disappointed I didn't see any wild alligators!

Portugal/New York

A few weeks later, Paul and I crossed the pond to meet his mom, dad, brothers, sister in laws, and niece and nephew in Portugal. I have been to Portugal once and I was dying to go back!! The food in Portugal was definitely the highlight (other than spending time with family of course). Everyday we ate fresh bread, cheese and fruit outside by the pool. At night we would go to local restaurants that would have the most incredible fish and steak! It was great spending time with our niece and nephew who we don't get to see very often. I loved going to Lisbon Zoo with them, and probably enjoyed the dolphin show more than they did. Another trip to Portugal is definitely on my list for the new year. Little did we know that our Portugal trip would turn into a New York trip as well! On our way back, our flight from New York to St. Louis was cancelled and we were stranded in New York for two extra days! Too bad it was freezing and soaking wet!

Omaha/Orlando
cw.jpg

The start of the summer I headed home to Nebraska. This time I brought my friend Ellie back with me. She had been to Nebraska twice before, both times it was freezing! It was so much fun showing off my hometown to her when it wasn't negative 30 degrees outside! We went to the College World Series, walked across the pedestrian bridge, explored the old market, and stopped by my favorite boutiques. We even attended the most exclusive summer event in Omaha... a Friday afternoon jazzercise pool day at my parents house!

Ellie and I hit the road again a week later. This time we headed south to Orlando! Florida was one of those trips that I didn't really know what to expect, and it turned out to be amazing! We both went down to work at the Miss High School America pageant, I spray tanned the contestants and she was a judge. My sister Maddie flew down to help me and to keep us company when one of us was busy working. We all had Thursday off together and spent the entire day at the Magic Kingdom. Disney was wonderful, but it didn't hold a candle next to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! Going to WWHP has been on my bucket list since it opened and it was more than I could ever imagine! Maddie and I went on the day Ellie was judging because she's a muggle and would be incredibly embarrassed by us running around with wands and butter beer!  I loved being a sponsor for Miss High School America.  It was a great pageant to attend and I met so many great girls.  It was also incredibly exciting to see my friend Emily Bray crowned the winner!

Scotland/London

At the end of the summer, Paul and I crossed the pond again, this time my parents and Maddie came too! Maddie had been to Scotland the year before, but it was my parents first time. It was so special to me to show them where Paul came from and the country that I've fallen in love with. It was a whirlwind of a trip cramming in both wedding planning and site seeing. I was able to show my parents the venue we had chosen in the east of Scotland. We visited the church Paul and I will be married in and the castle where will be getting photos taken. The craziness continued when we took the train down to London. We saw all the sites and visited the Tower of London. I had to make my grandma proud and stop by Harrods before we left and pick up some great fashion books to add to my collection! I am so excited that the next time we will all be in Scotland together will be for our wedding!

Nashville

A lot of Paul and I's friends are from all over the world, so Paul had decided to have his bachelor party (or as they call it, Stag weekend) a year early so everyone could make both the bachelor party and wedding. After six days (yes he had a six day bachelor party!) a couple friends came back to St. Louis. We decided to take a weekend trip to Nashville that started out great and ended up horrible! Paul had been sick since coming back from his trip, so he ended up staying back at the Airbnb while we went out on Broadway. The next day I wasn't feeling great, but was able to go out to dinner and meet up with Ellie H. and I's Miss USA sister, Brenna Mader. Half way through the night I knew something wasn't right.  I have never felt so sick! Paul and I dragged ourselves to an urgent care and I had strep throat and he had a chest infection. It was not a fun drive back to St. Louis.  I just have to say that Ellie Holtman is the greatest friend a girl could have!  I forgot to mention I also had a cold in Florida, and she took great care of me in both places. It's great having a pharmacist as a friend! She always knows what to do!

Nebraska... Again

We had to get over our sickness quickly because the following week we went back to Nebraska with one of our best men, Joe. I got to go to the bars with my newly 21 year old sister while the boys were at the Husker game. I also got to see one of my other best friends, Hannah with her new bae (haha I hate that word!) Mr. Shay Mooney! It was nice to finally meet him and hanging out backstage at his concert was an added perk! If you haven't seen Dan and Shay in concert you absolutely have to!  They are amazing! Check here for their upcoming shows! http://apps.danandshay.com/bebacksoon/

Washington D.C.

In the fall, Paul and I took our first trip together alone since 2010! We spent a long weekend in Washington D.C. I had never been before and I was excited to go. However, it was not what I expected.  We wasted a day looking at monuments from a bus when I wish I had spent more time at the Smithsonians. We fell in love with the Air and Space Museum! Fun Fact: my grandpa invented a part that was on the space shuttle and is displayed at the Smithsonian!!! Another highlight of the trip was renting bikes from City Bikes.  We spent the evening riding around the monuments which is much more fun than sitting on a crowded tourist bus!  D.C. was great to see, but I'm not dying to go back in the near future.

Kansas City

We were supposed to go back to Nebraska one last time to celebrate Christmas with my family, but Paul and I had a little impulse buy named Zoey! We had been planning on buying a dog in the New Year, but when we went to the pet store one random weekend they had exactly what we were looking for; a mini goldendoodle. She was perfect and we had to have her at that exact moment! Two weeks after having her, I picked her up and she squirmed over my shoulder and landed on the hardwood floor. We were both hysterical to say the least.  Paul and I rushed her to the emergency room and she had a broken back leg. She had to have surgery and our trip to Nebraska was cancelled. She is in a cast for four weeks, but doesn't even notice it. She's still our playful, cuddly pup and her decorative casts have managed to make her even cuter than before! So instead of going back to Nebraska, we decided to meet my family half way in Kansas City. It was fun to see the Plaza's Christmas lights and visit a favorite place from our childhood, the Crowne Center!

Scotland

After a flight delay and a reroute to Chicago and London, Paul and I finally made it to our last destination of 2015.  We spent Christmas in Scotland with his family and got to meet our newest nephew, Ollie! A few friends from England will be coming up to spend New Years with us in one of my favorite cities, Edinburgh!

I have big plans for 2016 that I cannot wait to share with all of you, but until then I hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

                                                        Lots of Love,

Mean Muggin

I am finally introducing products to my site! I have offered some products before, but it was through a third party, so I could not manage the quality or price. I've been wanting to make gifts at different price points for some time now. Hopefully in the near future Ill be adding more products, such as phone cases, travel accessories, apparel, and more! The possibilities are endless! I am used to doing mainly commissioned illustrations; now with my mugs I can actually draw what pops into my head. I am excited to start using my creativity a bit more to introduce new original designs! Be sure to check out all the mug options in the "Mug Collection" on my site.

My Logo & Alter Ego: Part 2

Being told you're not good enough is not an easy thing to hear. After not winning Miss Nebraska Teen USA, I still couldn't let my dream go. I would return to pageants when I was 20 to compete for Miss Nebraska USA. That year I was a hot mess. I ended up making the top 10, but I realized I still had to figure out who I was. I came back the following year and placed 1st runner up. I thought I would give it one more run the following year. I was so close to winning, how could I possibly not try one more time. In October 2012, my dream finally came true and I was crowned Miss Nebraska USA 2013.

My dream took five times to achieve, two tries at teen and three tries at miss. If that isn't perseverance I don't know what is! I found that after a pageant was over I could return to my quiet, shy life and only have to be outgoing when necessary.  Competing for the title of Miss Nebraska USA allowed me to step out of my comfort zone for a little bit, but my year as Miss Nebraska USA was a YEAR out of my comfort zone. I was thrown into so many awkward situations and always had to be outgoing and in command of the situation. But there was something about my crown and sash that would transform me into that person. I became used to public speaking and being the center of attention. Though one part of me would always have a bit of anxiety, my Miss Nebraska USA alter ego would say "you can do this!" I would often joke that I was like Hannah Montana; Shy, normal girl without the crown and sash, and then become a whole new person when I would "crown up".

This leads me back to the discussion of changing my logo. Starting a business is starting a new goal, much like my goal of becoming Miss Nebraska USA. I know it'll take many years to accomplish the success I'd like, but I can now take valuable life lessons from my years of pageantry and apply them to this goal.  When I was competing in pageants, it was easy to say, "oh that girl is prettier, taller, smarter, etc." The same is true with my business.  I can list 100 other illustrators that are better than me, but it doesn't matter.  The only competition is myself. When I look at my crown and sash sitting in my office, and the logo of me in my Miss USA dress, it's a constant reminder that I am good enough. I am proud that I accomplished a goal that only a small amount of girls can say they have.  It reminds me to continue to push myself out of my comfort zone, to stop doubting myself, and continue to dream big, work hard, and stay focused. I look at the sparkle and think to myself, "I can do this!"

                                                                 Lots of Love,

My Logo & Alter Ego: Part 1

A few months ago, I decided I wanted a new logo.  I wanted to distance myself from the pageant image. I didn't want to seem like I was one of those girls that was stuck in her "glory days."  I spent the next few weeks deciding on a new color scheme and new concept and was ready to rebrand my business.  Then one night, I was rearranging my office and adding a gallery wall where I proudly displayed my worn and torn Miss Nebraska USA sash and my illustration of my Miss USA gown. Right next to my computer I placed my crown and a notecard of my logo. I realized my crown and sash are more than just a piece of my past, they are a reflection of an entirely different side of me, a side that I need to be reminded of from time to time.

To understand completely, I have to take you way back and give you a glimpse of who I am. For those of you who don't really know me, I am a huge introvert. My ideal night is staying at home in my pajamas, no makeup, sketch pad in hand, and a chick flick on TV. Very glamourous. Growing up, I was always painfully shy.  When I was fifteen my mom took me to a modeling agency that opened up close to my house.  Before I knew it, I was signed and thrown into classes. Looking back, my classes were a lot like finishing school. It completely changed my life and began to shape who I am. I never had any dreams of being a model; I was in a few fashion shows and a couple of commercials, but more than anything it was something to fill my time. Luckily I joined when the agency first opened and In the early days it was filled with great people and good opportunities. Less than a year or so later, it would completely fall apart and become a total scam.

Even though it was something I never thought I would do, I really enjoyed taking classes!  It forced me out of my comfort zone and gave me my first taste of confidence.  Public speaking was my biggest fear, but after being shoved onstage to recite monologues week after week I began to creep out of it. I had classes where I learned how to do my hair and makeup, learned how to network, and worked with some amazing people.  I think that was the greatest part about the whole experience- the people that I met. I felt comfortable putting myself out there because the people in my classes were so supportive. It was at this agency were I met my friend Danielle, who would convince me to compete in my first pageant.

Before modeling I was a member of Omaha Theater Ballet's Junior Company.  I spent almost all my time dancing. I would have at least three hours of ballet classes six times a week, and if I had a show, like the Nutcracker, it would sometimes be seven days a week.  After a few years of strictly dancing, I developed bad hips, and quite frankly, I was burnt out.  I decided to stop dancing so seriously when I began to fill my schedule with more modeling.  With dancing and modeling you are told what to do, how to act, and who to be. You are a canvas, a prop, or a character.  The thing that intrigued me about pageants is that: 1. I got to perform onstage again, which I always loved,  and 2. I got to be myself.  I was allowed to walk onstage as Ellie Lorenzen, not Ellie: model #3 or Ellie: Dancing Icicle. My thoughts and personality actually mattered!

I signed up for Miss Nebraska Teen USA when I was seventeen years old. I thought that, if anything, I would get to spend a fun weekend with Danielle!  She lived far away from me so we didn't get to see each other very often. I really had no idea what to expect.  To my surprise I finished 2nd Runner up and won the Interview Award!  To me, that was as big of an accomplishment as winning the pageant! I walked away from that pageant feeling like a winner. Not only did I have the greatest weekend of my life, but I received a $48,000 scholarship to the school I would attend two years later, met my future college roommate, and most importantly gained a sense of confidence that would fuel me for the rest of my life.

I would compete for the title again the following year, placing the same, and to be completely honest, I felt somewhat defeated.  Competing in pageants is such a personal thing. In any other competition you know who the winner is. It's the person who crosses the finish line first or the one who scores the most points.  But when it comes to pageants, it's not a skill, it's you. It's your thoughts and beliefs, what you look like, I mean, how subjective is that!?  I'll be the first one to admit that pageants are unbelievably bizarre.  You put yourself out there to be ranked by five random so called "qualified" people, who ultimately have the power to change your life forever. Weird.

But like I said, it is very personal and I didn't take it lightly. I had something to prove. I knew I could be Miss Nebraska USA, it was just a matter of time...

I created the illustration above for South Carolina based photographer, Chasity of Younique Beauty Photography! I am a huge fan of her work! Be sure to check out her website, youniquebeauty.com. Her talent reminds me of some of the amazing photographers that I have had the privilege of working with over the years that I thought I would share some old favorites. Although I have never worked with Chasity, I hope one day our paths will cross and I'll get the chance to shoot with her.

Kyle Weber Photography

Kyle is one of my favorite photographers for many reasons. One, he was the first photographer I shot with right after winning Miss Nebraska USA! Two, he is one of the nicest guys I have ever met! Three, he is incredibly talented!  Being a fashion design student, I figured my friends would know some great photographers in the area. My friend Kristie introduced me to Kyle and she was my stylist for the shoot. We could not have asked for a more perfect day.  My photos from Kyle will be something I'll treasure forever, and I will never forget the fun I had shooting with him.  For more information on Kyle's work check out: kyleweber.com

Fawn Photography

Fawnia Opp is the queen of glamour! She is the definition of triple threat. Not only is she a hair master, but she also does makeup and takes unbelievable photos! I had the opportunity to shoot with Fawnia twice.  The first time we had fun with crazy eyelashes and crazy curls. The second shoot I was able to get photos taken in my beloved Miss USA gown. Derek Christie Photography

Now that I've hung up my pageant heels, Derek Christie is probably the last professional photographer that I will work with. The photos he will take will most certainly be my most treasured photos...my wedding photos! Paul and I had the opportunity to shoot with Derek in our favorite city, Edinburgh, Scotland.  We loved getting to know Derek before our big day and I absolutely loved how he captured the beauty of Edinburgh! Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

When I started this blog I didn't want it to be about me, but about my work. I find it strange sometimes that with social media everyone knows everything about everyone, or at least they think they do.  I can be a very shy person so putting my words and sharing my life on social media is like inviting strangers into my world. However, just recently a friend posted this saying and it couldn't be more true:

"Your smile is your logo. Your personality is your business card. How you leave others feeling after an interaction becomes your trademark."

I realized, my work is a huge part of me so why not share my experiences along with my illustrations.

A couple weeks ago, I was flying across the Atlantic again; this time to Scotland. Next summer I am getting married in Scotland because that is where my fiancee is from. He came to the states on a golf scholarship and we met the first week of school. The rest is history.  I have been to Scotland many times now, but this time was extra special because my parents and little sister came, too. It was a whirlwind of a trip, squeezing in both wedding planning and sight seeing. A Scottish wedding is nothing like I could ever imagine. The tradition and details that go into it are bit overwhelming, but I know it is going to be absolutely amazing! Never in a million years would I have thought I would marry someone from Scotland and have a wedding fit for a queen!  It was so much fun to show my parents the country that I've fallen in love with, and to celebrate the merging of two incredible families that I am so blessed to be a part of.

While planning a Scottish wedding, I came across some wedding details that most American brides do not encounter like kilt fittings, addressing the haggis, and hat shopping. Being engaged for a long time, we kept putting off wedding planning, but now it's less than a year away! One wedding detail that I hadn't planned on was illustrating my own wedding invitation.  I was hesitant at first, but decided to sketch some ideas on the flight over. As you can see in the picture, Paul had some other ideas and it turned into a two hour game of Pictionary.  Who knows if I'll actually go through with creating my invitation, but I am always up for a new challenge.

We took a mini trip to London while we were over and one of my big "to-dos" was to go to Harrods.  After my first trip to London six years ago, my grandma asked if I had gone to Harrods and was shocked that I hadn't gone!  I never made that mistake again.  This time while I was walking in, I noticed one of the window displays filled with illustrations of shoes.  Days later I found out one of my favorite illustrators I follow on Instagram, was doing a live sketching session in Harrods a few days later!  I developed a new goal  to add to my mile long list of goals.  I have so many ideas bouncing around my head and not enough time in the day!  With that being said, I am going to take advantage of this rainy day and try to get some work done!

What It's Like Competing at Miss USA

Tonight 51 beautiful ladies will be competing for the coveted title of Miss USA.  My heart goes out to the class of 2015.  The drama and uncertainty they had to endure in such an already stressful time will make their bond that much stronger, and I truly admire their determination and class as they handled the unfortunate events.  I often get asked, "what is it like to compete at Miss USA?" I came across my blog I kept when I was Miss Nebraska USA and here is the post I wrote about my experience...

"On the eve of Miss America 2013, I finally decided to sit down and blog about my Miss USA experience.  It will be nice to cuddle up on the couch tomorrow night with my Miss USA roommate, Ellie Holtman Miss Missouri USA, and reminisce on our time at Miss USA.  It’s also comforting to know we don’t have to be the ones on tv in a swimsuit in front of millions of viewers.  You better believe there will be a lot of sweets and junk food involved in our viewing party.

So many people have asked me what Miss USA was like, and to be honest, the only people that will ever truly know what it was like are the girls who experienced it with me.   It was unlike anything I could have imagined and I feel honored to be one of the select girls that really know what happens in Vegas, and as they say… What happens in Vegas… stays in Vegas.

As comic relief through the experience as well as to provide a humorous insight to how it felt sometimes, I describe it as a real life Hunger Games, of course without the vicious killing. For those of you who are not familiar with the Hunger Games series, this will make absolutely no sense to you. Here’s how the story goes...

Fifty-one lucky tributes (and in my rendition of the story we actually are extremely lucky) are chosen to represent their district (state) in the 2013 Hunger Games (Miss USA.) After preparing with my mentor, (my State Director and fabulous Vanbros team) I was shipped off to the extravagant Capital (Vegas.) Once there, I began my extensive training for the pageant (photo shoots, filming, rehearsals, etc.) and just like in the book, I had Stylists, like Cinna, that helped make me look my best and gave me support and encouragement along the way.  I quickly formed allies with other “Districts” in order to survive.  These “allies” became my support and family during the three long weeks in Vegas.  During long days of rehearsals and having cameras on us constantly, I couldn’t help but hearing “Gale” in my head saying, “they just want a good show, that’s all they want.”  And having Guiliana Rancic and Nick Jonas with us at rehearsals, I kept picturing them as the Caesar Flickerman character.  When it came closer to the telecast, I could feel the pressure and tension rise as if people were watching me constantly.   As I stood there onstage the night of the telecast, waiting to hear the top 16, I felt as if it were the reaping.  While I stood there onstage, it felt like the final drop on the emotional roller-coaster I had been on for the last three weeks.  A bit of terror, followed by a bit of relief, followed by a bit of sadness.

Being from Nebraska, I felt a little bit like Katniss Everdeen.  Nebraska is a lot like District 12, not exactly what you would call a “career” state.  However, I went to Miss USA ready to represent the greatest state in the country.  It was the greatest experience of my life and I feel truly lucky be part of the class of 2013! As my year as Miss Nebraska USA slowly comes to an end and the 2014 girls begin to take our places, I want to give all the ladies competing for their state titles some advice, one of you will be the next “girl on fire” and of course… “may the odds forever be in your favor..”

Good luck to the Miss USA class of 2015! I can't wait to watch tonight!

Lots of Love,

Miss High School America

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to Florida with my two best friends for the Miss High School America pageant!  It was a trip of a life time!  I am proud to sponsor such an incredible pageant for BOLD Sunless Tans and Ellie L. Illustrations. I was there to spray tan a few of the contestants, from which I learned that no one knows what I look like, or that I have other jobs.

When I graduated from college, I still had 7 months of being Miss Nebraska USA.  It was hard to keep a "normal job" when my schedule was still full of appearances and traveling.  With my history of skin cancer, busy schedule, and my mom's entrepreneur skills, I decided to buy a franchise.  I discovered BOLD Sunless Tans when I was in Vegas competing for Miss USA.  Kamela Brewer, the founder of BOLD, gave me the greatest spray tan I have ever had, and I was hooked!  It allows me to travel and meet some of the most interesting people, not to mention I can have a fabulous tan wherever I go!  I read somewhere that the average millionaire has seven sources of income. I love to work! But I guess when you love what you do you never work a day in your life. On top of Ellie L. Illustrations and BOLD, I also work as a communications and development coordinator for a non-profit childcare center in St. Louis.  I am so lucky that all my jobs bring me so much joy and allow me to do what I love most, travel!

Luckily the trip wasn't all work.  On Thursday, Ellie Holtman, Miss Missouri USA 2013 and my sister, Maddie Lorenzen, ventured to Magic Kingdom.  We found out that Liam Payne from One Direction was there too!  I am embarrassed to admit, but One Direction is my guilty pleasure, and my sister and I freaked out when we ran into him... twice!  I thought that was the highlight of my trip until we went to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios. IT WAS AMAZING!  I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan and it exceeded my expectations!

The Miss High School America Pageant was an incredible pageant to be a part of. Megan Gordon, Miss Collegiate America 2014, Lexi Collins, Miss High School America 2014, and Riley Spicker, Miss Jr. High America 2014 were the absolute sweetest girls and I wish them all the best in the future!  I also want to congratulate the new 2015 titleholders and I cannot wait to recreate your gorgeous gowns.

                                                                        Lots of Love,

Name one thing you really like about yourself.

I love that I have, and continue to demonstrate great resiliency. In April 2014, I became the victim of a hit and run accident. Although there were many times that I was frustrated with my body, especially with the back pain and swollen knees, I learned to be patient with myself and work towards getting stronger. Despite my injuries, I finished my Master's program, continued my modeling career, and started my own business. By turning my experience into my platform, I was able to collaborate with State House Representative Karl Rhoads (House District 29); and also attended a workshop organized and hosted by the Hawaii State Department of Health: EMS and Injury Prevention System Branch, where I was able to record my own public service announcement (PSA). I thank God that I am still here to share my story, and hope that I can influence others to drive with respect and value for themselves and others on the road around them.

What’s the craziest thing you have ever done?

Skydiving!! I am a bit of a daredevil, so I love trying new, adventurous activities (including skydiving, shark cage diving, parasailing, horseback riding, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge and water jetpacking). For my 19th birthday, my friends and I were able to go skydiving on the north shore of Oahu in Haleiwa, and it was one of the most exhilarating and memorable experiences of my life!

What would your dream job be?

I aspire to open my own private practice and work as a licensed child and family therapist, with certification in clinical mental health counseling. I also want to see my small business, LJ Interior Designs, flourish and become even more successful in the future.

If money and time were no object, what would you be doing right now?

Traveling. I absolutely love traveling, and got the travel bug from my dad. I have been blessed with the opportunity to visit places all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, England, France, Belgium, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Canada, The Bahamas, Jamaica, and various places within the United States. I have my heart set on someday traveling to New Zealand, Kenya and Greece. I even have pictures of these destinations on my dream board!

I'm Back!

My poor blog has been abandoned since February 25th! There is not enough time in the day to get everything done! I want to thank all my amazing customers who have kept me busy these past few months.  I absolutely love drawing amazing girls in their special gowns and I have the world's best customers.  I am so close to achieving my dream of being a full time illustrator.  Please help me reach this goal by sharing my website, Instagram, and Facebook page with friends and families.

I want to especially thank my customers on this order cycle.  They have been patiently waiting for their illustrations while I spent almost two weeks in Portugal.  Production was delayed even more when I was stranded in New York for a couple days when my flight was cancelled.  Luckily I can take my work with me and I had two amazing studios while I was away.

Hopefully I'll be posting much more regularly now, and I am excited to introduce you to some of the girls I've had the honor of drawing.  If you would like to be a featured Ellie L. Girl please email me at ellielillustrations@gmail.com.

Lots of love,

If you could talk to any one person living or dead, who would it be and why?

I would LOVE to sit down and have a conversation with Giuliana Rancic. She is such an amazing mentor, wife, and mother. She has a captivating presence about her and a wonderful personality!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Greece! I have seen so many pictures and it looks absolutely breathtaking.

Name one thing you really like about yourself.

I am very determined. Once I have a goal set in mind, I won't stop until I reach my goal.

If money and time was no object, what would you be doing right now?

Traveling, hands down! Going all over the place, meeting new people, and seeing new things. There are so many amazing creations that God created and I would love to see and experience as many as possible.

If you could change anything about yourself, what would you change?

I wouldn't change anything about myself, since I am happy in my own skin. God made me the way I am; I am special in his eyes. I believe that is something young girls need to always remember, especially in this day and age when looks are becoming much more emphasized in society instead of inner beauty.

Gabriella Tortorice

Gabriella is an adventurous and slightly edgy 15-year-old girl from Decatur, IL with a dream of creating makeup looks for the big screen, and a very strong love of Taco Bell. She is an honor student at Eisenhower High School, who passionately sings in Concert Choir and  an A Capella group, “The Mic and Ikes.” She is the 2014 National American Miss Illinois Jr. Teen.  She placed as a semi-finalist her first year competing and her determination and newfound confidence allowed her to be crowned as the new Miss Illinois Jr. Teen the following year. Participating in NAM (National American Miss) improved her interview skills and overall confidence. Before NAM, she could barely look people in the eye when she talked to them, and now Gabriella can speak confidently and clearly to anyone in the room. NAM has truly changed her life.

Name one thing you really like about yourself.

I really love my naturally curly hair. It may be hard to manage the thick ball of frizz that I wake up with, but I love that it makes me different. I love to be different in every aspect of my life whether it be my hair, my style, or my ambitions.

Who's your favorite cartoon character, and why?

Timmy Turner’s dad, Mr. Turner. Everything he says cracks me up. It’s especially funny when he blames a tragedy on…”Dinkleburg.”

If I gave you $10,000, what would you spend it on?

I would definitely buy more makeup and brushes for my collection and my special effects kit. I would also without a doubt buy a pair of white studded Christian Louboutin high heels, because I’ve always dreamed of walking in a pair of his shoes. After that I would take my family and friends to a really fancy dinner and if I had any leftover, I would save it for a rainy day.

If you had one day to live over again, what day would you pick?

I would relive the day when I went on the Hollywood tour when I was in California for Nationals. I saw so many things I had only ever seen on T.V. I had never even seen the ocean before that. When we went to Venice Beach, I felt like a little kid standing in the waves and looking out at the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. The day was filled with so many memories, and I wish I could enjoy them all over again.

Does your name have a special meaning and or were you named after someone special?

When my mom and dad were planning on having me they decided if I was a girl my name would be Gabriella. As for my last name, It’s derived from the original surname (Tortorici) that my father’s family brought over from Sicily when they immigrated to the United States in the late 1800’s.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a California Condor. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fly above everything. I would also enjoy looking rather majestic while perched upon a mountain top.
