This past Sunday I took a break from my normal orders and decided to try live sketching during the Golden Globes. Usually it takes me a while to do an illustration, so I really wanted to practice drawing quickly. I loved the rush of trying to get it done in a certain time and it was nice not having to worry about every little detail since it wasn't for anyone but myself. I picked the five dresses that stood out to me and they are all quite different!
The first dress I drew was Gina Rodriquez from Jane the Virgin. I love navy dresses! And this Zac Posen ball gown could not have been more perfect. Zac Posen is one of my favorite designers so I loved starting the night off with one of his amazing designs. I also love Gina Rodriquez! If you haven't seen Jane the Virgin yet, I highly recommend it!! Season 1 is on Netflix.
The Next dress, and favorite of the night, was Zendaya in a stunning Marchasa maroon gown. After I started, I panicked when I took a closer look at the fabric. It was a maroon gown, but it had a black lace/floral pattern. Since I was trying to do the sketch as quickly as possible, I stopped thinking about it and just let my hand take over. It was my favorite look and one of my favorite sketches I've ever done!
The next show stopping gown was Laverne Cox from Netflix's Orange is the New Black. This Elizabeth Kennedy jersey gown was so classic and elegant. The draping on this gown looked unbelievable on her and she knew how to work it! I couldn't get into Orange is the New Black, but I adore Laverne Cox and I loved being able to draw her.
I was very excited for the next drawing, because I LOVE Giuliana Rancic! I had the opportunity to meet her while competing at Miss USA and she is so sweet. I could never picture myself wearing this Alex Perry, but I think it looked fabulous on Giuliana! I don't think I've ever drawn an orange gown before!
I was going to be done after Giuliana, but then I saw Lady Gaga in her Versace black velvet gown. It's crazy how she used to show up to award shows in bizarre costumes and now shows up looking so glamorous! This gown was so perfect for her. It's a great combination of her new hollywood look and the unique haute couture she is known for.
I really surprised myself with this new challenge. I thought I would mess up and get frustrated, but I really enjoyed it and was able to draw and color all five illustrations in four hours! The highlight of the night however was finding out that Gina, Laverne, and Giuliana liked the illustrations! I about fell out of my chair when Paul nonchalantly said, "Giuliana just commented on your photo." Ahh!!! One goal I set for myself this year is to have a celebrity repost one of my illustrations. So please send me some positive thoughts as I try to accomplish this personal goal. Until then I will just mentally high five myself to the thought that so many women I admire saw my illustration.
I am planning on live sketching again for other award shows this season, so stay tuned!
Lots of Love,
